Finally! It seems like it’s been months since I last touched my sewing machine. I can see the light at the end of the Distance Learning Tunnel which means I can finally carve out some time to make Jenny’s Easy Carpenter’s Star Quilt.
It’s been totally bonkers around here since Ohio schools were shut down in the middle of March. But I don’t need to tell you about that, do I? Things are probably just as bonkers in your house, maybe even more so, so I’m not gonna whine about it. In a couple of hours, though, I need to take the kids up to the school so they can turn in books and assignments, which means the ‘school year’ is nearly over. Yay! I will finally have some of ‘my’ time back!
I’ve had this 10-inch layer cake in my hot little hands for over a month now, just biding its time, waiting for me to have time to unwrap it and decide what to do with all of its colorful, scrappy cuteness. I ordered it online from Fat Quarter Shop and it’s called Darlene’s Favorites by Darlene Zimmerman for Robert Kaufman Fabrics. I don’t see it in stock now so I’m glad I nabbed this when it was the daily Flash Sale item.
Now, what to do with it? I only have the one layer cake. I do still have plenty of white for background, so I’m OK there, but I don’t want to have to go out fabric shopping until next week, so I had to look for patterns that only use 1 layer cake. Lucky for me, MSQC recently posted a new how-to video that meets all my on-hand fabric requirements so I can block out the world and quilt all weekend long.
I’m going to use this layer cake to make the Easy Carpenter Star Quilt by Jenny Doan from Missouri Star Quilt Company. It really does look ‘easy’ and it only takes 1 layer cake and 2 1/4 yards of background fabric. The whole quilt is made with half square triangles and some 9 1/2 inch squares. It looks like the most complicated part is the layout.
I’m adding the video below and here’s a link to the page that shows fabric requirements. There’s also a link to download a free pdf to show you the layout.
Stay tuned and if I can get this done over the weekend I’ll share my new quilt top with you on Monday. In the meantime…
What are you working on this weekend?
Here’s hoping you and yours are all safe and well 🙂
