Remember all those little 4-patch blocks I made last week? Well, I finished my quilt top yesterday and it’s way too cute. Now I have to decide what to do with it. Should I add a border? Some decorative stitching? Some cute pink rick-rack? And most important… What about the quilting?
First of all, I’m pretty proud of this. I’d say at least 95% of the points line up and that’s a great accomplishment for me. It’s one of the reasons I decided to do this whole 4-patch thing. Repeating all those little blocks gave me a good feel for matching seams. You know what they say… Practice makes perfect. (But they also say…Don’t worry about ‘perfect’, just get it done!)
I made 60 of the 4 patch blocks using 2 charm packs that I got from Missouri Star Quilt Company. The 60 white background blocks are cut from yardage and so is the white border. The finished top, as it is in the picture, measures approximately 47″ x 55″.
Most Important Detail
I’ll be using this quilt to generate money for my church, either as a donation to be auctioned off or as an item to sell at the Christmas craft bazaar, so I want it to attract attention and be appealing to a lot of people.
Should I add another border? I really like all of the ‘whiteness’ surrounding the blocks. I think it gives it a sweet, crisp look. But I’m thinking a nice maybe 2 1/2″ print border might make it pop even more. Or maybe a 2 1/2″ print border and then another 2 1/2″ white border around that? If I don’t add another border (and probably even if I do) I’m thinking I’ll bind it with the same print that I use for the backing to give it some contrast around the edges. What do you think?
What should I back it with? I’m trying to be frugal here because of this COVID-19 thing and because I’m just basically a frugal person. I have plenty of white yardage that I could back this with, and personally I think that would be pretty sweet. I also have this print 108″ yardage but I’m not sure it’s the best color choice but some people might not like all that white. My ideal choice for backing would be to order yardage from this same fabric line but that would add another $20 – $25 to this project, at least. Would it make this quilt more ‘sellable’ or get a higher price at auction or would it even make a difference?
Should I add some embellishment? I’ve been thinking about it but I don’t think I want to add any embellishments other than whatever I decide to do with the borders. Rick-rack and decorative stitching ad stuff like that sounds cool to me but I think that might make it less appealing for some people, like people who aren’t as kitschy as me! 😉 (Although, who couldn’t use a few more buttons and bows in their life, right?) What do you think? If this was going to be your quilt would you want more drama on top?
What about the quilting?
So, that’s where I’m at. As soon as I make all these decisions I’ll be sending this off to my friend Carol Lippold to quilt for me. She does longarm quilting in her home. As they say in the South, “God bless her lil’ pea pickin’ heart!” Then the next question will be, “What pattern should I have her use?” Who knew quilting had so many decisions involved?!
