Fabric swaps are so much fun, aren’t they? And who doesn’t love getting happy mail? But, while most of the country is under quarantine right now, how can you get out of your house to find a box and pay for postage to send your fabric to your Swap Buddy?
Easy! You don’t have to leave your house. You can order the packaging and pay for the postage online. Pack up your fabric and send it off to your Swap Buddy, all from the comfort of your own home!
Here’s how to get the packaging for free.
Under the Quick Tools tab at the top of the page, click on Free Boxes.
You want to look for an envelope or box that says “Flat Rate Shipping”. This means it just costs one flat rate to ship, regardless of how much you put in the box or envelope.
Unless you’re really sending a lot of fabric you should be able to use either of the following:
Priority Mail Gift Card Flat Rate Envelope – EP14GT No, this isn’t just for giftcards, it just has a big red bow printed on it 🙂 You can order a pack of 2 or a pack of 5 and they’re free. This envelope measures 10″ x 7″. If whatever you’re shipping weighs 70 lbs. or less and it fits in the box it ships anywhere in the US for $7.75.
Priority Mail Padded Flat Rate Envelope – You can order a pack of 10 or a pack of 5 and these are also free. This envelope measures 9 1/2″ x 12 1/2″. If whatever you’re shipping weighs 70 lbs. or less and it fits in the box it ships anywhere in the US for $8.40.
To have these delivered to your home – free of charge! – just add them to your cart and go through the checkout process. (If you’ve never ordered fro the USPS before you’ll need to create an account.) And Voila! In a day or two your mail carrier will be delivering these right to your door!
Here’s how to pay for the postage
While you’re on the USPS website you can also pay for the postage. One-stop-shopping without leaving home! Here’s how to do it. It looks like a lot of work but I’m including every single little step here just in case…
If you’ve already created an account and you’re logged in then your return address should already be filled in at the top.
Tick the little box to the right that says “I would like to get tracking notifications.” You can choose to get notifications via email or text message. This is really good to have so you know that your package arrived safely.
Next, you need to fill in the shipping address, the address for your Swap Buddy. To the right you’ll see a little box you can tick so your Swap Buddy can also get tracking information. You’ll have their email address – just paste it into the box.
Scroll down a bit and you’ll see “Enter package details.” Here, you want to tick the little circle that says, “I’m shipping Flat Rate.”
Enter a package value and then select the type of service. You’ll want to choose Priority Mail, it’s the least expensive.
Next, click the blue button that says, “Select a Service” and tick the circle next to the appropriate envelope or box size. This will determine the amount of postage due.
Then just scroll down to the bottom of the page and click “Add to Cart.” From there you just need to pay for the postage, print out a shipping label, and tape it to your envelope.
Don’t forget to schedule a pick-up!
Did you know that mail carriers are not required to pick up your outgoing mail? Even if they’re already at your door because they have mail to deliver to you, carriers do not have to take your outgoing mail. Most of them do, but if you have something really important going out it’s best to schedule a pick-up, and you can do that from the USPS.com website, too.
